Commissioning a Bust

The sculpting process

The first stages can be performed either at the home of the sitter or at the studio in Cambridge. First it is important to spend some time with the sitter to get to know what poses are natural for them. Sketches are made, and photos and measurements are taken. Back in the studio, this preliminary work is used as reference material when sculpting the bust. If it is convenient to visit the studio then the final sculpting will be done from life. Once the clay sculpture is approved for casting the piece is taken to the foundry.

The time scale

The sculpting of the bust can take from a few weeks to several months to complete, depending on the scale and complexity of the piece. The casting of the bronze usually takes 8 weeks.
