Anthony Smith

Anthony Smith was born in Glasgow in 1984 but grew up in the Middle East, returning to the UK aged eight. Having been a keen painter at a early age Anthony discovered a passion for sculpting at the age of sixteen. He was instantly hooked and was soon devoting most of his free time to the study and practice of sculpting. At the age of eighteen Anthony received his first commission to have one of his sculptures cast in bronze.

In 2002 Anthony was accepted by Cambridge University to read Natural Sciences. During vacations from his studies Anthony was able to continue his sculpting. At the age of nineteen he began exhibiting in London.

After graduating in 2005 he set up a studio in Cambridge and began sculpting full time. He is quickly building a reputation for himself, with an impressive set of commissions to his name – including coin designs for the Royal Mint, a commemorative bust for the Linnean Society of London, and he is currently working on his first life-sized statue, for Christ's College Cambridge.

Influences and Inspiration

Anthony has always been fascinated by the natural world, and draws a lot of inspiration from his academic studies as well as from observing animals in the wild. Photography has been a passion for many years and it helps him to capture those fleeting moments that make for interesting sculptures.

‘Nature is always beautiful. All one has to do is look and understand.’ - Auguste Rodin

He began by sculpting predominantly animal subjects, inspired by the works of François Pompon and Rembrandt Bugatti. But over the years he has developed a fascination for human figure sculpture, and is a particular admirer of Rodin, and Charles Sargeant Jagger.

Anthony also has a strong interest in relief sculpture and the designing of medals and coins.

"I enjoy working in a range of styles - choosing for each piece the style I feel will best suit the subject. This way I am able to add another level of creativity to my work and keep my sculptures fresh and engaging."
